October 2009: We got a puppy!! "Jet" is a 5.5 month old puppy who was rescued by the Furry Friends Rescue. They think that he is a "Feist" which is a AKC breed, Southern squirrel hunting dog. He is adorable! He is actually about the same size as our cats!

September 2009: Katie's second grade class went to the Waterloo Historical Farm and Dewey School for a field trip. The kids were encouraged to dress is "period" dress and the volunteers had the the kids perform chores! Katie had to carry water using the yoke.

September 2009: We celebrated Brian's parents (Ellen and Barry Grossman) 50th wedding anniversary at the Ann Arbor Country Club. Ellen and Barry did not want a party, so we surprised them by getting some of their longtime friends together and conning Ellen and Bary into coming to the Club with us for dinner! A huge success!

July 3, 2009- the neighborhood put on another spectacular 4th of July event (on the third of July). The weather was a little cool, but the kids did not seem to mind! The water slide and the dunk tank were big hits! Elysa must have gone down the slide at least 15 times while Katie had fun being dunked in the tank at least three times! The fireworks which occurred in the evening were breathtaking!!

June 26, 2009- Another goodbye. Seo-Young left today. She wanted to go to El Azteco for dinner last night so we drove to Lansing and enjoyed the time together along with the Mexican food! Seo-Young was a wonderful surprise addition to our house! Famous Seo-Young statements: "OMG!" (said before almost any statement, or when scared, or surprised...or whenever!) We are so glad that she joined our family! It is hard to say goodbye....

June 22, 2009- Bianca left today. We went out to eat with the family last night to say goodbye. It is hard to believe that she was with us for just 10 months. Famous Bianca quotes: "SERIOUSLY??!!" (sirry-us-lee??), "Please, please, please?" (pleez, pleez, pleeeeeeeeez?), "I hate the (fill in the blank with: airport, post office, YFU, waking up). We really enjoyed having her in our family. June 20, 2009- It is hard to believe that 5 years and one day ago Elysabeth Grace Grossman came roaring into our lives! What started out as a 7 pound 12 ounce little bundle that slept all the time has morphed into a bundle of energy that talks and moves non-stop! She had a great birthday party with friends and some family. May 27, 2009- Katie's First Grade class put on a "Reading Event" that featured their science projects (Katie researched horses) and then had each child reading to small groups. Katie has really taken off with her reading skills! She reads chapter books now and can often be found sneaking a book by light of a contranand flashlight when she is supposed to be asleep!

4-19-2009 We met the Sharp's and Buttolo's at a park in Canton for a picnic. There was a huge play structure there with swings and slides and wonderful areas to climb and hide in! The weather cooperated-- for the most part! We had to leave rather abruptly to avoid getting soaked in a rain storm.

April 7, 2009: I had a great surprise when one of my best friends from high school called me up while I was driving home from Pennsylvania (see next post) to tell me that she and her family were in Ann Arbor! Froydis was a foreign exchange student from Norway during my senior year at Pioneer High School. It was great visiting and re-connecting!

April 2009- Katie decided to cut off all of her gorgeous hair and donate it to "Locks of Love!" What a great kid! In the end it turned out to be 12 inches when wet! April 2009: The Magnolia tree in our front yard is in full bloom now! It is really beautiful-- as well as really fragrant! The golfers are out too! Which means that the annual "sell the golf balls back to the golfers" sale is on! The girls (Katie and Elysa with friend Elizabeth) set up the table and signs all by themselves. Good ole entrepreneurship at work!

March 2009: Spring has come to the barn and Buckey is in a state of metamorphises (?)-- from a wooley mammoth to a "real" pony! Katie is really progressing in her riding lessons. She can now canter off the lunge line and continues to jump cross-poles. Her next challenge is to increase the height of the cross-poles and do two in a row.

March 19, 2009- the newest addition to our household is Princess Sarah Kitty Cat-- formerly known as "Monkey." She is a loving tabby who gives hugs and kisses and adores having her belly rubbed. March 20-21, 2009: Katie and Elysa participated in the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club's 67th annual skating show. The theme was "World Tour" and had music from countries and singers from around the world. Katie was in the group called "Ireland" and skated with 12 other girls. She was pretty independent this year and seemed to have a great time hanging out with her group. My mother and I were the co-captains for Elysa's group ("China"). We had 11 little girls ranging in age from 4 years to 11 years old-- Elysa being the youngest. There were three shows-- Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Saturday night--- all went well!! Lotsa fun!

March 6-8, 2009: Katie spent her 7th birthday in Frankenmuth getting ready for her Uncle Eric's wedding (bottom picture). Eric and Kati Laszlo tied the knot on March 7th in Fischer Hall in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Katie and Elysa were flower girls (top picture), I officiated (yes, I am a registered Minister with the Universal Life Church!) and Brian was an usher. A real family affair! Both Seo-Young and Bianca attended. They had a lot of fun playing games at the Bavarian Inn Lodge and checking out the town after the festivities were over.

February 23, 2009: Elysa and Katie are participating in the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club's annual "Melody on Ice" show this year- the theme this year is "World Tour." This will be the 4th year that Katie has skated and the second for Elysa. Elysa is skating in a group called "China" and Katie is "Ireland." Should be a good show-- everyone is welcome to come! An escape from the cold-- CANCUN!

January 16-February 1, 2009: We were lucky enough to get to go to Cancun, Mexico again this year. Brian's parents Barry and Ellen Grossman came too and we brought Bianca and Seo-Young with us- neither one had ever been to Mexico. We had a fantastic time playing in the pool, on the beach and at the actitivities that the resort puts on for adults and kids. Seo-Young stepped on sea urchin on our third day there and required a minor surgery to get the spines out of her foot. Luckily she was back up on her feet (without crutches) by Thursday. Both Bianca and Seo-Young spent a lot of time playing beach volleyball; learning how to play Black Jack and Texas Hold'em; and tennis. I think that everyone had a great time and it was a definite relief to get out of the cold and see some sunshine!!! The place we stayed was the Royal Resorts Club International Cancun-- great service, staff and location!!

January 2009- We have had a ton of snow lately! Plus it has been bitter cold. The kids have been having a blast playing in the snow and sledding down the hill in the back yard-- even the big kids! Bianca and Seo-Young have been sledding a lot too-- often with a whole group of teens. I have been having a lot of fun making hot chocolate and supplying last minute meals for big groups!

January 2009- Elysa asked to sign up for ballet and tap dance again. She is in a small class-- just her and a little boy right now. They have a grand time hopping and skipping all over the place. The instructor is teaching them the "proper" French terms for the moves-- it is really cute to hear these big French words come out of 4 year old's mouths!

January 6, 2009: It is with great sadness that I have to report that one of our beloved cats died yesterday. Akane (Ah-ka- nay) was 13 years old and had been battling respiratory problems for most of her life. Akane came into my life almost 11 years ago during a home visit back in my Public Health days. She glued herself to my side throughout the visit (to an asthmatic child in a smoker's home) and followed me around their house. When I was about to leave she got up on her back paws and tried to climb my legs-- a very difficult task considering that they had completely de-clawed her. I made the comment to the owners, "look, she wants to go home with me!" They told me to take her because she was demanding, threw up all the time and had "stinky" breath! I scooped her up and took her home! The rest is history! She was the sweetest cat. She will truly be missed!

December 25, 2008: Christmas day progressed to Granny and Grandpa Gene Stoermer's house for homemade cinnamon rolls and more family and presents! We were fortunate to have almost the entire family there for the feast of presents and turkey. My 101 year old Grandmother, Sylvia Ryder, was even able to come up from Florida to celebrate with us- she is a real inspiration!

December 25, 2008: I woke the kids up at 7:00a to start our Christmas day (why wake them up?! To get to the cinnamon rolls at my Mom's house!). Santa had definitely come-- there was a little concern about him possibly NOT stopping at our house-- and there were plenty of gifts to open! Seo-Young and Bianca received t-shirts and other teenage girls paraphenalia. Katie and Elysa each received an American Girl Doll (Josephina for Katie and a "Just Like Me" doll for Elysa) and lots of little girl stuff including sparkly shoes, books and a snowboard!

December 24, 2008: The festivities began Christmas Eve at the Grandparent Grossman's house. Our whole "clan" was there plus Susan, John , Barbara, Erin and Johnathan Baughn. We all exchanged gifts first and then sat down to dinner together. The evening was ended by attending Christmas Eve candlelight service at Webster Church. Brian and Elysa called it an early night and went home when we all left to go to church. It was an interesting service with an international flair-- many of the songs were sung in different languages including Hawaiian, Phillipino, and Spanish.

November 27, 2008: We had our "second" Thanksgiving at the home of my parents. We had a full house with my brother Peter, his wife Tracy, her brother Gary, Tracy's mother, my parents, my grandmother (101 yo!!), and the 6 of us. November 26, 2008- we have another addition to our family! Seo-Young Choi is a 17 year old foreign exchange student who is Korean born, but living in Germany. She has been with us for a couple of weeks or so and seems to have made the transition well. Of course, the girls have totally accepted her-- they love having two older sisters! Notice the squished car conditions? We can no longer transport everyone in one car!!

November 9, 2008: Katie is really enjoying her horseback riding again. We had about a 6 month period of time where she was struggling to get over her fear of cantering after falling off of "Big Mack" during a show. We changed barns in October and it seems that the change in environment and teacher has really made the difference! She cantered on "Buckey" (above) on her first lesson with David Peters at "Hedge and Turf" ! Now she is cantering without stirrups and actually jumping cross poles! UNBELIEVABLE!! Sorry about the quality of the photos-- they were taken with my iPhone which doesn't do as well with low light and movement.

November 8, 2008: The seasons have definitely changed! It is a lot colder here in Michigan finally- and darker. Which means, of course, that the leaves start falling! Our house has quite a few large trees so the task of cleaning the yard took two days. Brian did most of the work with Bianca helping out quite a bit. I helped out with cleaning out the gardens and sucking up leaves with my dad's "machine." Thank goodness we have family in the area and they have cool tools! Katie and Bianca enjoyed the piles while Elysa was at a friend's house playing.

October 31, 2008: All three girls got dressed up this year. Elysa (4) went as "Dora the True Princess," Katie (6) was Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), and Bianca (16) was Hannah Montana. My mother made the girls' costumes-- which were really beautiful! Both Katie and Elysa also collected for UNICEF. Katie came up with a whole "opener" to ask for donations (totally on her own): "would you like to donate to UNICEF for my sister and me? I can wait while you go get some change"-- this just came tumbling out of her so sweetly-- no one could resist!

Philly Trip-- Riots and all!

October 27-29, 2008- I received a travel scholarship to the CHEST Conference in Philadelphia, PA. Travel there was horrible-- plane delayed, 30 minutes or more of serious turbulence-- but the trip overall was a lot of fun. I finally got to go see Independence Hall (middle) and the Liberty Bell (bottom) which was really exciting. I would have definitely learned/remembered more history if this trip was included in my education. I also got to experience the "excitement" of Philadelphia winning the World Series-- which ended up in what I would call a riot-- tons of people out on the streets (top).

October 25, 2008- It was old home week at Kalamzoo College! My 20th college reunion-- completely throws me off thinking that I have been out of college for 20 years! I can't be that old!! Wasn't high school just yesterday? The top picture is of Ann Fildew, Kim Barrow and me during the Class of 1988 lunch. The other shot is one of the chapel. The campus has chnaged a LOT since I was there last! But, it is still beautiful and I am glad that I went. It was fun catching up with Kim Barrow while carpooling and hanging out!

October 11, 2008: Bianca and I had a lot of fun shopping for a dress for her to wear to Homecoming. She went with a group of girls- some of them are YFU students that either live in the neighborhood or who are also going the Dexter High School. Parents drove them to Creekside Restaurant for dinner and then another set of parents drove them to the school for the dance and then home again. Bianca reported back that they had a lot of fun!

Katie was really worried that her teeth would never fall out! She has lost 6 over the past two months and still has two more to go! We were lucky enough to get a YFU Foreign Exchange Student this year from Hungary! Bianca is 16 years old and will live with us for the school year! Her bus stop is right next door so she didn't have far to go for her first bus ride. All of the parents were out to take pictures-- the kids tolerated it for a little bit! Bianca has blended into our family well and we are really looking forward to the rest of the year.

Katie started First Grade this year. She was really excited about starting school. All day school is a big change, but she seems to be adapting pretty well!

Summer Fun

We went to Portage Lake with one of Elysa's friends from Sunshine Special Preschool (Sasha). They had a great time playing on the sand hill and swimming in the lake! The girls have had a fantastic summer-- lots of time spent at the pool and lake, playing with friends and just having fun outside!
